The Generosity of Unknown Individuals: How a Person I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Land the Role That Altered My Path

During the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my companion was considering pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had planned a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a big multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side known as International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the dining hall, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and started talking to other diners.

Beside me was an Iraqi man studying engineering at Columbia University. He asked me what I did for a living, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – adjacent to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I ought to seek a position with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that night. The man from Iraq approached me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I attended the interview – but straight off told my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

In typical New York fashion – a city where opportunities abound – she declared: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his name, but his selfless gesture changed my life in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the confidence or self-belief to reach out at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

Critically, that gig at Columbia resulted in a job in Zurich where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
